While we can’t stock every laminate style available, we can make Gem-Loc with any non-metallic HPL on the market. We do stock the most popular patterns from Formica®, and Wilsonart®.
Gem-Loc laminate countertop edges are manufactured in pieces that are 106″ long by 1-9/16″ tall by 1/4″ thick. Both ends of every piece are finished with a 90 degree cut. We offer Gem-Loc edges with several back profiles for different installer preferences.
For capping backsplash cores with Gem-Loc, we offer edging that is 106″ long by 1-3/8″ tall by 1/4″ thick with a solid surface insert on just one edge. These strips are used to cap backsplashes with a core depth greater than 3/4″. For backsplashes with a core depth 3/4″ or less, our backsplash caps can be ripped lengthwise with a thin kerf blade for a custom fit.
Gem-Loc Edge Profiles
Gem-Loc edges are offered with several back profiles to meet installer preferences. The FB profile, TG profile, and T profile are all designed to make edge installation simple. Here is a detailed description of each profile:
The Flat Back profile does not have a tongue or groove and works best for those installers who prefer installation flexibility. With this profile, no rabbet is necessary and build up is recommended.
The Tongue and Groove profile is a multipurpose design and can be used with build-up or as a stand-alone edge (3/4″ deck without build-up). Build-up should be recessed 1/4″ from deck face or applied after the edge is installed.
The Tongue profile is meant to be used only with build-up. It is not recommended as a stand-alone edging (3/4″ deck without build-up) due to potential breakage during use.
Gem-Loc Backsplash Cap Profiles
The Backsplash Cap profile is 1 3/8″ wide to allow for scribe at the top of the backsplash. It requires a rabbat to guide installation.
The Backsplash Cap Flat back profile allows for scribing against the wall, but does not require a rabbit. It does not have an alignment tongue.
The substrate (backside/base) we use to manufacture our Gem-Loc edges is MR-50 rated moisture resistant medium density fiberboard (MDF). HPL (High Pressure Laminate a.k.a. the laminate) is hot glued and pressed to the substrate using high strength urethane reactant glue. And, solid surface materials are acrylics commonly used to make entire countertops. For Gem-Loc edges, the top and bottom edges are created by gluing in strips of solid surface using high strength urethane reactant glue.
All materials used in manufacturing Gem-Loc edges are either no or low VOC and all of the surface and seam materials are considered waterproof.
Gem-Loc Premier edges can be installed by anyone with decent carpentry skills and tools. The tools and skills needed are common for carpenters and countertop fabricators.
Installation of Gem-Loc edges with the TG or BC profiles requires a router and slot cutter bit. Installing Gem-Loc edges with the FB or BCF profiles does not require a router.
A miter saw and optionally a disk sander are needed to cut to length and miter the corners. Since Gem-Loc edges are made of MDF, laminate, and solid surface (plastic) no special blades are needed for cutting.
A fine flat file is recommended for finishing where the Gem-Loc edge meets the counters’ top. Some 000 steel wool can be used to rub out any flat spots in the top edge after filing or to bring the stock matte finish up to a high shine.
Masking tape and a good waterproof wood glue, such as Titebond® III, are all that is needed for the actual attachment to the countertop. A damp rag is recommended for cleaning up glue that squeezes out.
Finally, a good wax surface treatment is recommended if you wish to really make it shine. We recommend PROTECTALL™ Shine Plus. It’s great for the laminate countertop as well.
Masking tape and a good waterproof wood glue are all that is needed for the actual attachment to the countertop.
